Now that both big names in the music game business have released their titles for this holiday season, it’s once again time for us to play the games, weigh their pros and cons, and then of course gossip about them. Reuters (via Kotaku) has a great article that helps with the gossiping - regarding the battle that MTV/Rock Band fought with Activision to get their hands on the Beatles catalog of songs. As it turns out, unsurprisingly, it all boils down to money, and it wasn’t much of a fight.
Earlier in the year, there were rumors that both companies were in talks to nab the Fab Four’s great works. Sony/ATV chairman and CEO Marty Bandier mentioned in March that they were interesed in looking into Guitar Hero. Apparently, it was Activision’s deal to lose. Speaking of his talks with Activision regarding the Beatles working with GH Bandier now says,
“It was presented as if they were doing the music business a favor,” Sony/ATV CEO Martin Bandier said. “It’s true you can choose other types of music, and somewhere along the line someone’s going to do it for free for the exposure … When it comes to the Beatles, the leverage changes. We’re very happy with the terms of our arrangement with MTV.”
We never heard much more about the rumored talks until now, when the word came from Harmonix and MTV last week that they had secured the rights to produce a new Beatles-only game. Originally expected to be part of a Rock Band title, we now know that it will be a standalone game that spans the career of the Beatles and 45 of the Beatles songs are to be included. Game details beyond that are yet to come.
If what’s been said is true, Activision’s CEO Kotick may have his eye on the bottom line profits, but only time will tell if that ultimately affects the sales of the franchise at the bigger level. For the rest of the Reuter’s piece, head on over here.
Months after rumors and speculation that the music game companies were in battle to win the enormous catalog of Beatles tunes, a winner has emerged. Apple Corps and MTV, along with Harmonix today announced their partnership to create a brand new video game to feature the songs and span the career of the Beatles. Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Star, as well as Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison have been involved and have blessed the deal.
Very few details about the game itself were discussed and more details are expected over the coming months. What we do know is that this will not be a Rock Band title. This will be a custom title, released by Holiday of 2009. “By presenting their music and artistry through the creative filter of a groundbreaking video game, we are giving legions of fans and music lovers all over the world a profound, new way to experience The Beatles,” said Alex Rigopulos, CEO and Co-Founder, Harmonix. “This game will be a celebration of the Beatles undeniable legacy.”

Harmonix and MTV have long sung the praises of Rock Band as a platform rather than just a game in which you’d just continue to buy expansions. This seems to conflict with two of their latest announcements. The most recent, of course, being the release of the AC/DC Track Pack (being purchased as a disc rather than DLC). But taking a step back, they’ve also made it clear that the original Rock Band tracks will never be released as DLC. Why, you ask? Because they want to publish the original Rock Band forever.
Last week an ad ran in Craigslist looking for folks in the Los Angeles area who want to be a part of a new MTV reality show: Rock Band 2 the show!.
That’s right, a reality show based on a band playing plastic instruments. Don’t get me wrong, if I were in LA, I would totally be there auditioning, but who would have thought? (Then again, who would have thought that I would end up playing Rock Band on Stage in front of 20,000 people to help open for Motley Crue at the recent CrueFest show we attended.)
