Have you ever played Guitar Hero enough to want to take it with you on the go? That’s been an impossibility with the franchise - until now. This June, Nintendo DS owners can shred wherever their travels take them with Activision’s first portable entry in the Guitar Hero franchise - “Guitar Hero: On Tour”.

How can this be pulled off effectively enough to be fun you may ask? Well, the folks at Red Octane have developed a plug-in peripheral they have dubbed the “Guitar Grip” which ships with every copy of the game, and it plugs into the Gameboy Advance cartridge slot. Both the original DS and DS Lite models will support this new piece of hardware. Your hand wraps around the back of the DS and holds both the system & peripheral in place, allowing easy access to the 4 fret buttons on the Guitar Grip. (Believe me, it’s a lot easier to see than it is to try & explain…) Check it out:

Valve - makers of the hit game Portal (with that crazy Still Alive song)- have begun announcing their latest figures on which games have sold the most on their Steam System - the company’s PC platform for digital content.  With over 150 games available across PC applications, movies and demos, gamers are starting to flock to Steam for online gameplay activity.  February’s top seller?  Audiosurf.

angelssing.jpgAudiosurf is a music-adapting puzzle racer where you use your own music to create your own experience.  (What?  Puzzles and my Rock Music together?? I think I hear angels singing because I must be in heaven! ) The shape, the speed and the mood of each ride is determined by the song you choose and the goal is to hit as many music notes on the ride as possible.  Click here to see a link of a user playing Audiosurf to Blur’s Song Two.

Similar to Rock Band and Guitar Hero -Audiosurf’s success shows that more and more people are turning to games to have a musical experience and in addition, the success of the games has led to more music sales.

Audiosurf is available from the audio-surf.com website for only $9.95 and there’s a free demo available for download if you wanna try before you buy. Audiosurf is receiving rave reviews and was a finalist in the 2008 Independent Games Festival. The Escapist’s review suggests this: Buy it!

I’ll be checking out Audiosurf myself since you can play music from your own MP3 and CD collections and I haven’t played enough puzzles lately.

I was just reading about this service and was considering giving it a try…. Anybody using it? (Probably not in the Central Florida area until now!!)  Sounds like the Netflix of Video Games. Most likely I would do this before actually dishing out cash to buy too many more games (read GH:A).

On February 8, 2008, video game developer/publisher Activision Publishing filed to protect the trademark DJ Hero in relation to “computer game software and related instruction manual sold together as a unit; interactive video game programs; computer game discs; downloadable software for use in connection with computer games; video game controllers; interactive video game comprised of a CD or DVD sold as a unit with a video game controller”.

Other than a custom Guitar Hero turntable mod reported by Gizmodo (and GameTrailers.com), and some wishful thinking by gamers, this trademark filing is the first indication of Activision’s future plans for the franchise, as well as peripherals beyond guitars.

While you wait for DJ Hero to arrive, Mork suggests you take a look at the DJ Dictionary. You might have your baby scratch technique down. But you’re gonna need to know how to crossfade your bubble scratch hamster style to avoid that GAME OVER train wreck.

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry talked to USA TODAY’s Mike Snider about the plans for their new Guitar Hero: Aerosmith game. Here’s extended excerpts from their conversations:

Q: What do you think about Aerosmith having its own video game?

Steven Tyler: There are some battles you can’t fight. You would like to keep it traditional and make it just deep, deep tracks from albums or B-sides. But technology is going so fast right now rather than be left behind, you are going with the flow.

It’s a different day and age. Twenty-five years ago we would never have let one of our songs (Dream On ) be one of those used in selling cars (in a 2004 Buick commercial). But now, like with I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing (in 1998’s blockbuster film Armageddon), it’s placement.

When I heard about Activision and all this. I thought whatever I can do for this to make it as good as it can be — because my son plays it — I thought I should do it.
