According to the recently released October sales numbers by the NPD group, first week sales for the newest installment in the Guitar Hero series may have been a disappointment to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick and Co. Sales for Guitar Hero World Tour in its first week (launch date October 26) were 534,000 units. Compare this to last year’s October release of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, whose sales were 1.4 million units in its first week and you’ll see the huge disparity. Could we be seeing signs of the rock game war raging between Activision and its closest competitor Harmonix’s Rock Band series?

Months after rumors and speculation that the music game companies were in battle to win the enormous catalog of Beatles tunes, a winner has emerged. Apple Corps and MTV, along with Harmonix today announced their partnership to create a brand new video game to feature the songs and span the career of the Beatles. Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Star, as well as Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison have been involved and have blessed the deal.
Very few details about the game itself were discussed and more details are expected over the coming months. What we do know is that this will not be a Rock Band title. This will be a custom title, released by Holiday of 2009. “By presenting their music and artistry through the creative filter of a groundbreaking video game, we are giving legions of fans and music lovers all over the world a profound, new way to experience The Beatles,” said Alex Rigopulos, CEO and Co-Founder, Harmonix. “This game will be a celebration of the Beatles undeniable legacy.”

In a recent brief chat with “Rush Hour” director and Activision consultant Brett Ratner, MTV Multiplayer learned two interesting little factoids. One: Brett Ratner is the rat bastard responsible for the confusing and non-discernible name of the “complete band game” called oddly enough: Guitar Hero World Tour. Two: Activision has retained some common sense beyond their actual hiring of Ratner in that they have so far refused to allow him to make a Guitar Hero movie.

The folks over at IGN have put together a great preview of what we can expect from the upcoming release of Guitar Hero World Tour (which we know is a “Complete Band Game“). Here are some of the most notable points we found:
- 8 songs listed adds 2 new confirms to the “leaked list” - likely the real deal
- Wireless drums are rock solid sturdy, quiet and adjustable (req 2 AA batt)
- Use the touch pad on the new guitar to “tap” bass notes or to slide through purple-linked notes
- Vocals adds an “easy” mode that only measures rhythm and not pitch
- Vocalists get free-form areas where you can sing what and how you like
- You can’t “save” a band member who’s failed -activate star power to boost them up a bit before they fail
- If you pause the song mid-game, a handy 3 second countdown before the song starts back up

According to the mathmatically talented folks over at Scorehero.com and their calculations, the song “Seven” by Vagiant in Rock Band is technically impossible to drum your way to a Gold Star score. “Seven” as well as several other songs in the game have been identified as either impossible to Gold Star on drums and/or on guitar so we spoke with Helen McWilliams, lead singer/guitarist for Vagiant, as well as Harmonix Spokesperson-With-The-Most-Flair for the scoop.
Scans from the latest issue of Stuff Magazine posted on the official Guitar Hero forums, show off several new tracks for the forthcoming game! Get ready to rock out with the following newly revealed songs:
- “The Joker” - Steve Miller Band
- “Light My Fire” - The Doors
- “Obstacle 1″ - Interpol
- “In the End” - Linkin Park
- “Beat It” - Michael Jackson
- “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” - Smashing Pumpkins
As always, we’ll continue to update the track listing as new songs are made known. In the meantime, you can check out the magazine scan for yourself, by clicking here.
