After months of rumors and denials, the XBOX 360 with a Blu-ray disc drive is due to be manufactured soon and shipped in Q3 of 2008. Pegatron Technology, an OEM subsidiary of Asustek Computer, is reported to have received the winning order from Microsoft for a Blu-ray equipped XBOX 360.

Earlier reports cited Lite-On as the company with the privilege of building the new console for Microsoft. Lite-On is also currently one of the suppliers of the internal DVD drive fro the XBOX 360.

One of the strong points for Sony’s Playstation 3 has been the integrated Blu-ray player. The PS3 had the ability to draw both gamers and audio/video enthusiast, and this was proving to be a major advantage over its XBOX rival. It is estimated that 85% of Blu-ray players in use are PS3s. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer had admitted that Microsoft had been working on support for Blu-ray under Windows during this year’s Mix08 conference. Rumors began to swirl and many began to expect Microsoft to announce a Blu-ray peripheral for the XBOX 360.

ps3_sad.jpgMicrosoft announced today that it was going to lower the price of it’s Xbox 360 console line in Europe.  Starting Friday the standard 20GB unit will run €269.99/£199.99, with the Elite at €369.99/£259.99, and the Arcade @ €199.99/£159.99.   So all you Europeans who have been waiting patiently to buy yourself a console so you can play Rock Band, your reward for patience is a nice price drop!     For us Americans who don’t feel like doing the math, the price for the basic version of the Xbox 360  will drop 20% from the equivalent of about $500 to $400. The price for the Xbox 360 Elite, which features a 120 GB drive, falls 13% from $600 to $520.  Microsoft sold 230,000 Xbox 360 units in January, while Nintendo sold 274,000 Wii consoles. Sony sold 251,000 PlayStation 3 units, according to market watcher NPD.   My guess is the death of HD-DVD is what is prompting the price drop, since it makes the PS3 more attractive now that Blu-Ray ‘won’.

In an effort to revive the format war over HD DVD versus Sony’s Blu Ray, Xbox Marketing has sent a message that they’re still in this game.    The price of the Xbox 360 HD DVD player has been officially lowered from $179 down to $129, effectively immediately.

Just posted on the blog run by the Xbox Marketing team - GamerScoreBlog:

We’re happy to announce that we’re lowering the price of the popular Xbox 360 HD DVD player from $179 to $129 (estimated retail price) in the U.S. and Canada, effective immediately.

Likely in response to word that Warner Brothers at CES had slammed the door closed on the debate by endorsing Sony’s Blu Ray - Microsoft has lowered the price of its HD DVD player by a whopping 28%.  We’ll see if this makes a real difference or if its just the sound of the death rattle as HD DVD exhales.
