Warner Music fired a shot at MTV and Activision, saying that it may pull out of both the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises. Edgar Bronfman of WMG is saying that they aren’t getting their fair share of sales, but Activision was quick to fire back.
An article coming from the Financial Times quoted Activision’s CEO Robert Kotick saying “I think his view was … that [Warner Music] should be compensated the way they might for a performance on iTunes. But, this is an entirely different business [than iTunes] that is very technically complex. We’re going to favor those publishers that recognize and appreciate how much we can add value to their artists.”
A Warner Music spokesman said the company had “enormous respect” for the investment and creativity game-publishers had brought to the music-gaming business.
He added: “We hope that our partners in the gaming space appreciate not only the value of their own contributions but also those of the recording artists, songwriters, record labels and music publishers on which their games are significantly based.”
How come the benjamins always seem to get in the way of the fans? Warner’s catalog includes Led Zeppelin, R.E.M., The B-52s, Green Day, and Depeche Mode. Look at DragonForce album sales before and after Guitar Hero III and tell me it’s not worth it!
Guitar Hero: World Tour has been touted by Activision as a “big innovation” for the successful franchise. Not only has the game expanded to include drums and vocals, the guitar itself has had a huge upgrade. Take a look at the video which showcases the new slider bar and features.
Again capitalizing on the “Air Guitar Phenomenon” (huh?!?), Nitrous Roxide and his pals are delivering expansion packs on the megahit successful well liked bizarre well, let’s just say “interesting” Guitar Hero spinoff Guitar Hero: Air Guitar Rocker. Expect to see 80’s Rock, and Heavy Metal, each featuring 10 songs around August 1st for $14.99.

The Associated Press is reporting that Guitar Hero: World Tour will contain two of the best songs of all time (in my opinion of course) by famed rocker Jimi Hendrix. The two tracks promised are “Purple Haze”, and “The Wind Cries Mary” and reportedly more songs are to come in the form of downloadable content (DLC) for future release. Although the original Guitar Hero contained the cover track “Spanish Castle Magic”, this will be the first time that a player can rock as Hendrix himself thanks to Experience Hendrix. The organization which runs the late guitarist’s legacy provided the game’s developers with the ability to use his likeness, as well as his music.
The version of ‘Purple Haze’ that will be featured is a live track, recorded at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1969. According to Songfacts.com, this song contains one of the most misheard lyrics ever, with “Scuse me while I kiss the sky” interpreted as “Scuse me while I kiss this guy.” Hendrix added to the confusion by sometimes singing it that way and pointing to one of his band members.
[UPDATE: According to a second source, Rolling Stone magazine's "Rock and Roll Daily Blog", some of the DLC we get after release may include the tracks "Foxy Lady" and "Little Wing". Click here to read the full article.]

An article in BusinessWeek confirms what Activision has already been touting: Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS system has Rocked Out in sales! Regardless of our take, the game is clearly a hit and came in second only to Metal Gear Solid 4 with sales of 422,300 units. Video game sales in general continue to be the shining spot in an increasingly shaky economy. Click here to read the rest of the BusinessWeek article.
