Looking for ways to add more fun to your Rock Band jam sessions?  We’ve added a few new goodies to our Rock Band gear that we like so we’re here to let you in on some of our little secrets. We tried the Rock Band Jam Kit from BD&A, and the Rock Band Cymbal Expansion from Mad Catz to liven things up and really like both.

rockbandjamkitFirst, the Jam Kit.  No pink option was available, but my close-second favorite was the purple tiger set.  The box contains face-plate stickers to cover the whole body of your RB Strat, a matching purple and black guitar strap, purple/black drum sticks, and some pretty nifty purple tips for the ends of the sticks.  While I sorta like the stickers, and I didn’t necessarily need new sticks, I’m pretty pleased with the quality of the guitar strap, and the tips have had a significant impact on dampening the noise from the drumset.  These tips were actually a very pleasant surprise.  We picked these up impulsively at the MTV store in Times Square, but you can get them online (and on sale) at Amazon for $22.50.  Not bad for the whole pack.

It’s difficult to believe that three years ago today we were playing Guitar Hero on our PlayStation 2 with its squeaky 3/4 sized plastic Gibson SG controller. Within a short time the franchise evolved into a full band experience with Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour. With each new game came new guitar controllers officially licensed by Gibson, Fender, and various third-party controllers such as TAC and Nyko.

While some gamers may be satisfied with the standard, first party plastic controllers, others may be looking for a more realistic experience. Enter the Peak Starpex PS2/PS3 wireless guitar controllers, the first full size, wooden guitar controller in wide supply.

RockGamer.com reader Kijdhefgi gives his thoughts on the 3rd string player in the rock games battle

Rock Revolution is well worth it for the $15 I paid for it at Best Buy. I’d recommend a rental of it but it’s cheap enough to go out and buy. It’s fun to bandwagon on hating this but it’s not a bad game. Their PR is really bad and I can see that turning a lot of people off from it, and their own drumkit is kinda funky, but the game itself is enjoyable. Then again, there’s enough of you people that hate on things you’ve never played or listened to around here, so I’m not sure if anyone’s gonna heed my advice and try this out. Oh well. I like it, and I’m better than you.

RockGamer spent the weekend playing music games.  With the number of releases that have recently come out, we’ve spent a lot of time covering the game news but not actually getting to enjoy the product. Well that changed, thankfully, but now back to more coverage as we review the AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack. If you’re an AC/DC fan, you’re probably going to want to pick this one up.

Most people were a little confused when the AC/DC announcement came, making the incorrect (or correct?) assumption that this was just additional DLC for Rock Band 2.  When specified that the entire track pack was a standalone game, and could be purchased only at Walmart (in the form of a disc - not downloadable), gamers fumed that Harmonix was converting to Activision’s model of making full album DLC the norm, rather than allowing the flexibility of picking and choosing individual songs.  However, gamers soon learned that if they purchased the Rock Band branded AC/DC game, they would also receive a code which would make all songs downloadable and therefore playable within Rock Band.  All of this is true.  So, the question becomes then, why have a standalone game at all?

Regardless of the why, here’s what we found.

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! We are about to witness a slobberknocker!

“In the blue corner, weighing in at a gazillion dollars and managed by mega-publisher Activision, we have a newcomer to the full-band genre… Guitar Hero World Tour! Their exclusive deals, music creator, and incredibly sexy drums are sure to intimidate any competitor.

“Fighting in the red corner, managed by music goliath MTV, and trying to hold on to full-band supremacy, we have scrappy musicians turned superstar developers Harmonix with Rock Band 2! With a setlist to drool over and groundbreaking online modes, will the champ show enough heart to hold on to the belt, or have they lost the Eye of the Tiger?”

LET’S GET READY TO RUUUUUMBLEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Ding, ding!
