Led Zep Says No Stairway to Guitar Heroes and Rock Bands

From an article about Guitar Hero: Aerosmith in the Wall Street Journal, we learn what we’ve already been assuming by now.  Despite the fact that music games are leading to stronger actual music sales, we’re still probably not gonna get any Led Zeppelin songs in our favorite music games.

Quoted from the article:

Led Zeppelin’s thundering riffs are among the most sought after by music game makers, but the group’s guitarist, Jimmy Page, and his bandmates have repeatedly turned down offers from both Activision and MTV, says Peter Mensch, a partner at Q Prime Management, which manages Mr. Page, along with Metallica and other acts.

The sticking point: The band isn’t comfortable with the prospect of granting outsiders access to its master tapes, a necessary step in creating the games. “It ain’t about the money,” Mr. Mensch says.

This is disappointing, but not surprising, since we haven’t seen ANY Zeppelin songs even in cover form in any of the games since Guitar Hero came out in 2005. Still, I would love some Kashmir.

Those insufferable jerks. Their explanation doesn’t really explain why they won’t allow covers. I guess they are holding out for Rock Band: Led Zeppelin (and the associated payday).
