Activision wants the world to know that they're nowhere near ready to relinquish the rhythm game crown to MTV/Harmonix and their rookie sensation Rock Band.
| The publisher, along with developer Neversoft and perennial rock gods Aerosmith, took over Times Square Friday afternoon (two full days before Sunday’s launch) to unveil the latest entry in their guitar simulation series, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.
RockGamer.com was there to bring you the scoop. |

The festivities kicked off with a short press conference at 4PM Eastern, followed by a private party at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square.
Members of the press and a few lucky guests were among the first to get their hands on GH:A and the Aerosmith-branded Gibson Les Paul guitar bundled with the game. |
| Frontman Steven Tyler (some of you may know him better as Liv’s dad), drummer Joey Kramer and rapper DMC of Run DMC (pictured right), all of which appear in the game in full 3D glory, took a few minutes to mingle with the fans, sign autographs, and mug for the camera.
Steven was all smiles (literally… look at the size of that piehole). DMC in particular was extremely approachable and down to earth. The remaining members of Aerosmith, including guitarist Joe Perry, were also present but less accessible to the crowd. |

That’s all fine and good, but what about the game?
From my brief gameplay experience (in two-player mode only), all I can tell you is that it’s more of Guitar Hero, with new characters, new venues and new tracks. The songs seemed properly charted on Hard and Expert. Don’t expect Dragonforce-type challenges because you’ll be playing mostly Aerosmith songs with a few other bands sprinkled in for added flavor, including Lenny Kravitz, The Clash, Cheap Trick and The Cult. I did notice that in two-player mode the lead singer is missing, so if you pick Guitar Hero’s original characters as your avatars, the only Aerosmith member onstage during your performance is drummer Joey K. He may play third fiddle to Tyler and Perry in terms of popularity, but in this game he is the MAN! |
| Two-player cooperative mode still splits the parts into lead and bass/rhythm (depending on the song) and plays exactly like Guitar Hero III. Unfortunately there was a constant line of people waiting to play on the dozens of LCD screens throughout the venue, so I was not able to take the story mode for a test drive.
However, I have it in good authority that Cena’s Corner will be delivering a fresh, in-depth video review of GH:A in the coming days. |
