I think Harmonix is getting the attention of the Record Industry.   The combined revenue from the DLC of both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band in 2007 surpassed digital music download revenue, which up until then, was pretty much the only growth seen in the music industry.

In other words, more money is being generated from music by our favorite rocking games then on iTunes, Napster, and Rhapsody.  Combined.   This is GREAT news for us.  More bands are going to take the gaming industry seriously and want to have there music available for rocking.

I mean, comon.  iTunes is SO 2007.  This is 2008.  If I’m gonna pay for a song…. I wanna Jam to it with my friends.  Harmonix, are you listening?  We’d like more then 3 songs a week.  Red Octane/Activision, are you listening?  We want more then 3 songs a month!!!!!!

I first spotted this story on CrunchGear.  Props.

According to sources who received the March issue of OXM magazine earlier than most, here is the expected lineup for March. If this ends up true, we’ve got some major rocking to do…. Have I mentioned that I want to marry Trent Reznor? He gets me closer to god…..

Rock on.

Tom Petty

GLENDALE, AZ — This is not your father’s Super Bowl.

Instead of rehearsing an elaborate stage show – complete with countless dancers, multiple songs, fireworks, and the rest – Tom Petty has decided that during Sunday’s halftime show he’ll simply play “Through the Fire and Flames” on his Nintendo Wii, and then walk off the stage.

“I just figured, why waste all that time? Why make everyone sit through an insufferable halftime show again?” said Petty, who is very excited about the game between the Giants and Patriots. “Instead, I’m just going to bitch DragonForce on ‘expert,’ which should be enough show for everyone.”

Through the Fire and Flames is known for a remarkably complicated note pattern, and finishing it on expert mode is considered (in the Wii/Guitar Hero III community) to be like climbing Mount Everest.

“I have a lot of accomplishments in my career,” Petty said. “Gold records. Platinum records. Grammys. All of that. But there are two things I’ve never done – play the Super Bowl halftime, and prove to the world that I can hammer a 150-note streak. So I’m going to take out both of those challenges at one time on Sunday.”

Petty has announced that he’ll simply be standing in front of a small TV. On the stadium’s JumboTron television, the camera will switch from the note pattern to his fingerwork, and then back.

“This is going to be the most outstanding halftime show in the history of the Super Bowl,” Petty said. “People are going to be talking about what Johnny Napalm does this Sunday for a long, long time.”

Given that the halftime ceremony is actually slated to be about 20 minutes, the NFL has announced that it’s going to fill in the rest of the time by showing a lengthy YouTube video of a bunch of water buffaloes in a fight with some lions.

Hey all - I’ve just posted a question in the forums that I’m hoping you guys will chime in on. I’m cute but ignorant on all the differences. Would you all head to the forums when you have a minute and shout out your thoughts?

Console War

Bang Camaro album cover

The fusion of rock and video games has become big business. And it’s giving the ailing music industry a huge boost - small bands including Boston’s Bang Camaro have found flocks of fans, while stars from Metallica to the Monkees are collecting fistfuls of download dough.

By any estimate, Guitar Hero has been nothing short of a phenomenon since it appeared on the PlayStation 2 game console in 2005. While not an original concept (it owes much to Konami’s Japanese game GuitarFreaks), it’s generated sequels and copycats. Now, for the first time, it’s playable on Macs (and Windows PCs) thanks to the efforts of Aspyr Media.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the latest installment of the game; unfortunately, it’s the first to be made without the help of original franchise developer Harmonix (which has moved on to EA’s hugely popular Rock Band game). Guitar Hero III is an evolution of the same gameplay that you’ll find in the original Guitar Hero and its sequel, Guitar Hero II, with a few important changes.
